Kerala is blessed with abundant resources in terms of wildlife, ecological areas and sanctuaries. For an ardent eco-tourist there are a variety of options to choose from. Be it jungle safaris, mountain climbing or exploring caves, Kerala has it all.

Kerala has 12 wild life sanctuaries and two national parks. They are Peppara Wildlife sanctuary, Neyyar Wildlife sanctuary, Shenduruni Wildlife sanctuary, Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, Idduki Wildlife sanctuary, Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary

Parambikulam Wildlife sanctuary, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Muthanga Wildlife sanctuary, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, and Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The national parks are Silent Valley National Park and Eravikulam National Park. There is scope for mountaineering, jungle safaris, river crossing, trekking, bird watching etc. They are easily accessible and have good facilities for tourist. The forest staff is well trained in topics of wildlife, tourism, ecology etc.

 

Eco-tourism spots in Kerala are Alapuzha, Athirapally Vazhachal, Bhoothathankettu, Kumarakom, Munnar, Nelliyampathy, Ponmudi, Devikulam, Edakkal Caves in Wayanad, Thekkady, Thenmala, and Vagamon. There are other areas that are being developed as reserves and wildlife protection zones. The Western Ghats of Kerala with its tropical forest ecosystem has much to offer those who visit Kerala.

 

The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is home to rare wildlife, plants and birds. It is covered by tropical evergreen forests, tropical leaf shedding forests and the kinds of trees and plants are Akil, Bhadraksham, Chanbdanavemp, Maravuri, Cheeni, Kadukka, Konna, Kuntherekka Pine, Maruthu, Neli, Poomaruthu, Punnappa, Rosewood, , Teak, Thanni, , Vediplavu, Venga, Vanthek, and White Pine. The fauna in Idukki include Elephants, Vipers, Pythons, Rat Snakes, Hornbills, Kingfishers, Deer, Bears, Leopard Tigers, Wild Pigs, Cobras, and Woodpeckers.
