Homestay Cherai Beach, Cochin

Homestay Cherai

Laying low on the south-western coast of India and towards the middle of Kerala, this serene town and its beach are great attractions for tourists. The Cherai Beach is located on the northern end of the Vypeen Island and is definitely the most charming feature of this part of Ernakulam district. But there are other sights and sounds to savour here.

The best time to visit Cherai (15-kilometre-long) beach is from September to May. In December, don’t forget to attend the annual fest at the beach. This resort town is famous for its backwaters and cruises. You can opt from sunset cruises, dolphin watching cruises, day-long cruises, overnight houseboat cruises and more.

Cherai’s lagoon in the backdrop of the beach is a mesmerising sight. The small shops and tea stalls in the area add to the charm of this town. There are plenty of hotels, homestays, resorts and restaurants around Cherai. Beachside cafes and shacks are found too.

There’s a long and wide walkway on the beach that will take you to the end of the beach. During holidays and festivals you can see hundreds of stalls and hawkers here. The trim, sandy beach will be full of people – young and old – frolicking around. Tourists can visit nearby temples, churches and an old lighthouse, too. The lighthouse is located at Ochanthuruth and is open in the evenings.

The Pallipuram Fort and the Cruz Milagres Church are other attractions.
Many ways are there to reach Cherai – you can drive down to the town from High Court Junction in Cochin, via the Vallarpadam bridges or you can take a ferry from Fort Cochin to Vypeen. From there you can reach the beach on a bus or a in an autorickshaw.
