Houseboat Alleppey

If you go on a houseboat trip once, you’ll never forget it. Kerala has numerous rivers, lagoons, lakes, canals and waterways. Over 40 rivers make up the 900km backwater network of Kerala. Cochin, Kollam, Alleppey, and Kottayam are the four districts where the backwater houseboat trips are concentrated. There are many agencies and travel operators who conduct tours and trips across the state.

The Vembanad lake is the biggest backwater body in Kerala and the Ashtamudi Lake is the second biggest one. One a backwater cruise you can visit the famous Chambakulam St. Forane Church. Go for slow cruises and visit small villages and towns along the canals—Nedumudy and Mancompu village. You’ll find temples, churches and much more along the way.

The Kayamkulam lake is a great spot for backwater cruises. Here, you’ll find artisans engaged in country boat building, coir manufacture, prawn cultivation, sand mining and rice farming. From there, the boat takes you to the coastal city of Kollam.

From Cochin, there are lagoon trips around the city, daily boat trips to Alleppey and around. Backwater cruises go from Cochin to Kumarakom, Alleppey, Kayankulam and Kollam. Many resorts, eco-lodges and hotels have tied up with houseboat agencies, and they provide a variety of offers.
