Kumarakom - Picturesque Backwater

Kumarakom is a group of islands on the Vembanad Lake in Kerala. The place has a moderate climate. Heavy rains occur from June to August. Winter is from December till February. In summer, the temperature goes up to 35°C and 25°C in the winters.


The 14-acre Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to hundreds of types of birds. Local birds like the cuckoo, owl, egret, waterfowl, heron and water duck are common here. It is also visited by migratory Siberian cranes. Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle, and other birds are seen here during their respective migratory seasons. Houseboats and motorboats can be hired to go on bird watching cruises. November to February is the best season for bird watching.


Kavanattinkara, near Kumarakom, hosts boat races with almost 50 race boats as participants on the next day after Onam. The backwaters come alive with the songs and shouts of the oarsmen and helmsmen of the snake boats. At least a hundred oarsmen are seated in a boat.

 

According to legends a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening routines and the water parted for land to rise. It created the island of Pathiramanal. It means the ‘sands of midnight’. It is accessible only by boat.

Family boat trips, motor boats and speed boats are available on the Vembanad Lake. The cruise takes you through backwaters and paddy fields. R-block is a 3,000 acre Island in the Vembanad Lake is lower than the sea. Paddy is cultivated below sea level.

 

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls is 18km from Kottayam. The waterfall cascades down the mountains from a height of 100ft. There are rubber plantations surrounding the area.
