Vasco House Fort Cochin

Believed to have been built in the sixteen century, Vasco House is one of the oldest buildings in the area. Located on the corner where Rose Street meets Bastion Street, in Fort Cochin, Vasco da Gama is said to have stayed here till his death in 1524 and thus the name. The glass-paned windows, lowly verandahs and balconies are very European in style. This bed-and-breakfast facility has spacious rooms with high wooden ceiling and large windows opening towards the historic St Francis Church where Vasco da Gama was buried. Many movies and music albums have been shot in Vasco House and around.
The homestay is located within walking distance of the Chinese fishing nets, museums, coffee shops and handicraft emporiums in Fort Cochin and other places of interest. The boat jetty, too, is about a kilometer away. You can stroll down the road to antique shops and curio shops.
Vasco Cafe is a spacious traditional coffee shop on the ground floor. With a tempting menu and average prices, Vasco Cafe will be an interesting experience for its visitors. The room’s décor consists of simple teak wood chairs, white walls and soft lighting. Definitely a good place to relax and dine. A casual atmosphere, courteous service and the interesting menu make it a popular eatery.
It serves breakfast with continental as well as south Indian homely food. Freshly ground Kerala coffee, fresh juices, fruits, pancakes, homemade chocolates, cakes, milk shakes and ice creams will tempt you. Lunch comes with fish, prawns, chicken and fresh vegetables.
Facilities like money exchange, air ticket booking, houseboat stay, ayurvedic massages, trekking tours, tea and spice plantation tours, day trips, cultural tours and packages can be arranged for a minimal charge.
Host
Vasco Home is run by Santhosh Tom, his wife Sheela and his family. They have tried their best to preserve the building in its originality. Two luxurious rooms are available for guests. The Post Office is right opposite them. One cannot miss this colonial-style building that faces the street upfront. The old stone staircase stands as it did during the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule of Cochin. The hosts stay on the ground floor of the same house. They have two children – Alan and Avereena.
